Cummings Statement on New Republican Benghazi Fundraising

Press Release

WASHINGTON— Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, issued the following statement in response to the latest Republican campaign to raise political funds off the deaths of four Americans killed in Benghazi:

“This shameless new fundraising effort reveals just how closely intertwined the Benghazi Select Committee is with Republican political attacks against Hillary Clinton,” said Ranking Member Cummings. “Raising political cash off the deaths of four brave Americans is offensive and sickening, and Chairman Gowdy should put an end to it immediately.”

Last May, Chairman Gowdy claimed during an interview on national television:  “I have never sought to raise a single penny on the backs of four murdered Americans.”

These latest ads use Chairman Gowdy’s name, image, and position on the Select Committee to request political donations.  They were issued by Stop Hillary PAC, which describes itself as “created for one reason only—to ensure Hillary Clinton never becomes President of the United States.”

This is not the first contact that the Stop Hillary PAC has had with the Select Committee.

On September 18, 2014, one day after the Select Committee’s first hearing, the group delivered more than 264,000 signatures insisting that Chairman Gowdy issue a subpoena to compel Secretary Clinton to testify. The next day, Chairman Gowdy approached Ranking Member Cummings to discuss seeking Clinton’s testimony.

Earlier last month, the press reported that Chairman Gowdy was scheduled to appear at a “Beyond Benghazi” fundraiser for the Republican Party of Virginia.  After reports of his appearance became public, Chairman Gowdy’s office stated that he would no longer attend the event.

The RNC has also already issued an attack ad #StopHillary also referencing Benghazi.
